The Buck Brand Story
The story dates back to the mid 1990’s. The citrus industry economics of the day had made it increasingly difficult for individual farmers and their families to earn a living through the sale of their citrus crops. Large fruit wholesaler conglomerates banded together which lowered prices to the point where the viability of independent citrus fruit farmers was brought into question for both current and future generations. For these reasons, the “family farm” became increasingly less viable.
Enter Lisle Babcock, the determined farmer of Buck Brand Citrus from Terra Bella in the San Joaquin Valley. He’d always grown oranges for flavour, and did his best to distance himself from the commodity markets. At Thrifty Foods, the search for the finest orange was on in full force - as the commodity crops out of California weren’t “bearing fruit” - and customers were frustrated.
Thrifty Foods met with Lisle and spoke in terms of, “How much do you need to be viable?”... “Can we buy your whole crop?” From there the relationship has grown.
Thankfully, customers have appreciated what Lisle’s oranges stand for – Great taste, support of family farming, and dedicated growing methods. In turn, Buck Brand Citrus has flourished, has helped neighbouring family farms reach viability, and finally, this year, have been accredited as Certified Organic.
Enjoy Lisle’s oranges, and the rest of the citrus he grows. It truly is a reflection of the character of his family.
